An alfresco area is among the most popular features in a house, with one third of Australians saying the space is essential in their dream home. This result was revealed in a recent study, commissioned by homebuilder Henley Homes, which asked 3000 Australians about “must haves” in their ideal house. An outdoors entertainment space including an alfresco or barbecue area is clearly a popular addition to a “forever home”, with 33% of respondents saying it would help sway them to buy. Space for the family tops the list with 42% of respondents saying three or more bedrooms is a necessity. Next comes off-street parking with 39% of people wanting a garage or carport.

Despite Aussies embracing the outdoors alfresco area people in inner city locations are battling shrinking block sizes and relying on parks and cafes rather than entertaining at home. Alfresco areas are about comfort and entertainment. Whether it is a family barbecue or just relaxing yourself, having a few creature comforts can really help an outdoors room shine. It’s recommended that you make alfresco areas weatherproof; there are endless floor options to consider; and the right lighting is important.

All Henley homes come with a standard alfresco, which generally comprises two built-in walls and two open walls. You can add on features such as outdoors blinds to close in the space to make it that little bit more waterproof, essentially making a sunroom for the colder months. Many people put downlights through, so it becomes an extension of their living space; while others include a feature fan and pendant lighting. Outdoors kitchens are often included in alfresco areas, including a built-in barbecue, kitchen sink and bar fridge.
